Mr Andrew Patterson's back!!!

11/12/17 At 9:30 today, Mr Andrew Patterson came back to Team5 with an guest, Raenan!
Raenan's a ex student from P.E.S, he was attending at P.E.S about 4 years ago and now he is
attending to Tamaki College. Today he talked about how his college's life been. When he was in
intermediate, he was like all of us, then as the intermediate school life ended. It was time to move
on to college life. When he first knew he was going to TC (Tamaki College) he didn't wanted to go there because some of this friends who weren't going to TC said that, it was a bullying school and they always fought with other school.

But Raenan's mum didn't change her so she told him that he can go to TC for the first year and change to Glendowie. After a year, Raenan decided not to change because TC had many opportunities, he always had a goal to be a head boy when he first started college and now after 4 years, he became Deputy head boy for 2018....He gave us many inspirational advice.

Mr Andrew Patterson

1/11/17 Around 9:30, Mr Andrew Patterson came to Team 5 to have a talk with us. The first thing he talked about was A + I = M. A is for Aspiration, I is for Inspiration and M is for Motivation. This talk was about how we'll succeed in the future if we aimed for what we wanted to do.

The second subject he was talking about was Grit. Grit is having the ability to carry on even if you're not feeling good about your life. The last subject was "Be a giver". Giving people is such a great thing to do because you'll actually make the other person feel great and you'll also be proud of yourself. This 11 years old boy who attends to Manurewa Intermediate. He gave his lunch money to this homeless man two weeks straight. The great thing about it was that Uili cared about the homeless man and not about himself. In 2 weeks, Uili changed the homeless man's life and now he's got a house and a job.

If you want to know more about Willy, here is a Link to it. I hope you enjoyed reading some inspiring stories. What Uili did gave me so much inspiration to be like him.

How to be a good role model

Good role models are everywhere around us, they usually help us with our work. We can talk to them about stuff that we are uncomfortable with and we can take notes and lessons from them about how to be a good role model.

The 1st way to be a good role model is to behave and do appropriate things in front of kids. If you do any rude or cheeky stuff in front of them, they’ll just copy you. That means you’re not being a good role model.

The 2nd way to be a good role model is to respect others and treat them the way you want to be treated. If you treat them with no respect then they will treat you the same way you treated them.

To wrap it off, you make sure that the words that come out of your mouth are kind and appropriate. If you say kind and appropriate stuff then your mind will start becoming positive.

For conclusion, I think that we just need to behave and do appropriate stuff in front of kids. Reason being is because, they are the future of our next generation and what they learn from us now, they’ll teach and show to those around them.

For our first week of school we started off with a explanation writing.

Take Flight

WALT: Engage our readers by using precise language

I was travelling in the 'Radio-Flyer; when all of a sudden my grandpa and I were in a jungle. There were black monkeys with purple eyes that were screeching at us.  Long scaley alligators were all around us searching for  food. For a moment I wondered if we were going to be their next meal. Slowly, grandpa and I realised that the alligators were coming towards us, their long jaws snapping hungrily. My grandpa and I tried to escape but there was no way out of the jungle. Wherever we went, there were  deadly animals chasing us like they wanted to rip our skin off. Eventually, we came to a clearing and the animals were all gone. I guess they found a better meal with better protein!!!
This week, we're focusing on using precise language in our writing. Up above, is my
writing about the Radio - Flyer and there's a video you can watch. Hope you enjoy!!

Speeches

WALT:Finalise and deliver a speech
Education is the road that help children to reach their destination. Many children around the world do not get a quality education where they can learn and develop.

For every kid, education is important for them but in most countries education is   not free, that’s why lots of kids don’t get the opportunity to go to school and learn because some parents can not afford the money for their children’s education.
Some people around the world are poor and that is because when they were younger they didn’t have a proper education. So we should all focus on our learning while we’re young, so in the future we can achieve many opportunity that are waiting for us now.

The aim of education is  knowledge, not of facts, but of values.

This week we had to deliver a speech in front of the class about any topic. My topic was "Do you think education should be free"? The most common topic was " Why should kids get paid to go to school"? Everyone performed their speeches in two days.

Persuasive writing

Kids should get paid to go to school.
Do you think kids should get paid to go to school? I think kids should get paid to go to school because for some kids, they don’t have lunch because their parents don't have time to make lunch.

I hope that you agree with me because lots of kids in New Zealand struggles with money and that’s not a good thing. Kids should get paid at least half the money that teachers do because
the teachers couldn’t get paid unless the students were learning and coming to school every single day.

Another reason why kids should get paid to go to school is that kids will be more excited for school and finish their work on time. They’ll want to go to school early as they can and they would work their hardest knowing that they would get paid for it.

I think that kids should get paid to go to school, so some kids can actually have lunch and they would be excited for school everyday.

This week for writing, we did persuasive writing. Here's my writing that I've wrote.

Our year 8 leadership camp

WALT: write a recount
It’s that time of the year again, Year 8 camp. Every year, the year 8's would go on camp and this year, year 8’s went to Kauaeranga valley in Thames. We all piled into buses and went on with our trip.

While at camp we did a lot of activities my most challenging activity was railway jigger. I jumped on the jigger and started pumping my arm. It was harder than I thought, my arm started burning inside and I could feel the flax going past my face.

I could taste my dry mouth while I was pushing my jigger and I could feel my dry lips. Nearly every students struggled to push their jiggers around the corner, even the teachers.

Finally it had come to the end and everyone was tired and thirsty. When they all got off their jiggers, everyone fell to the ground and started moaning about how tired they were.

Last week, the year 8's went on camp and the year 7's had to stay at school. At camp, the year 8's had lots of fun and of course we had lots of leadership opportunities and the year 7's had lots of time to build each other up.

Daniella had a tough time at school because some people would tease her. One day daniella was very sick and she had to stay home. While she was at home someone kept  phoning her and hanging up. Daniella got really angry so she threw her phone away.

Narrative writing

In 2000, there were two girls but one of them were rich and one of them were poor. Their names were Jessica and Ella.
Jessica was amazingly rich but Ella wasn’t. In Jessica’s life she had everything that she’d ever wished for, she had ten times better things than what normal kids had.
But in Ella’s life, she wasn’t rich like Jessica she was just a kid that didn’t have no money no nothing. She tried to find a job but she had no luck finding one. So Ella was off trying to find a job the next day until she found a penny and that penny had brought good luck to Ella she had found a job just like that.
Ella enjoyed living with her friend Emily they both moved to california where Jessica had lived so that if Ella and Emily were in need of help they could just go and visit Jessica if they were in det of their bills water food or anything Jessica was like a sister to Emily and Ella jessica was really helpful.
So they lived a happy life together and they were living a dream.
This week, my literacy class have been writing about their stories. Here's my writing that I've finished.

Polyfest

Polyfest is a festival that celebrates every culture. The ASB Polyfest features traditional music, dance, and speech. Around Auckland, students come compete on five stages, Maori, cook island, Niue, Samoan and Tongan. There is an another stage call diversity stage, it’s for other cultures that are not included in Polynesian.

The first activities was AUT, some of the people from AUT university came and explain how important our school is and they ask some us questions. I learnt a lot of things from polyfest. One of them are, when there's a fire going on going in your kitchen you don't use water to settle the fire because water and fire don't go together. So you grab a kitchen cloth and wet it and put it over the pot.

We had lots of fun, we thank you to the teachers and the parent helpers who helped us go there.
